What to Do If You Don't Have Flood Insurance After a Flood

8/19/2022 (Permalink)

Homeowners insurance policies typically exclude damage caused by flooding. Residents of flood-prone areas should obtain a separate flood insurance policy, otherwise they will have to pay for damage restoration out of pocket or obtain relief through a federal program. Here are four types of assistance that may be available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

1. Transitional Sheltering and Temporary Housing

After the president declares a federal disaster area, Transitional Sheltering Assistance can lower the cost of staying in a hotel during the days or weeks immediately following a disaster. Homeowners can also seek Temporary Housing Assistance for a period of one month up to 18 months.

2. Grants for Cleanup and Restoration

A homeowner may want to apply for a grant to fund the restoration of a residence located on a flood plane. Grants can be used for repairing structural damage or replacing other losses.

3. Repair and Replacement Assistance

If the location of your home is declared a federal disaster area, you may be eligible for a one-time payment for Repair and Replacement Assistance. This option will not cover the costs of flood damage, and is intended to supplement a flood insurance policy.

4. Low-Interest Loans

It may be possible to obtain loans that have low interest rates to finance residential flood damage repairs. These loans are usually capped at $200,000 for a primary residence and $40,000 for property including renters' losses. Annual interest rates may be as low as 1.75 percent for a 30-year period.

After a federal declaration of emergency, homeowners may benefit from these and other services administered by FEMA. If you obtain flood insurance, you should seek an estimate from storm and water damage restoration experts and make a claim. Professional cleanup and rebuilding services can reduce the likelihood that secondary damage will result from primary flood damage at a residence.

What Is a Flood Cut and Why Is It Necessary?

8/19/2022 (Permalink)

If you have experienced flooding in your commercial building, it may be necessary for the restoration company to perform a flood cut. This is probably an unfamiliar term for most business owners, so this guide will provide a brief explanation of what it is and why it is done.

What a Flood Cut Is

When a water restoration company like SERVPRO of Lake Geneva needs to cut the drywall in your building, this is called a flood cut. The reason this is called a flood cut is that the cut is made 12-18 inches above where the flood damage stops. It is done to facilitate drywall tear-out. A flood cut may be performed in a variety of situations:

  • Wall has been touched by sewage water
  • Damage is too severe to save the wall
  • It isn't practical to dry out the wall without removing sections

When a Flood Cut Is Necessary

Flooding sometimes causes sewer lines to back up which can lead to your building being exposed to contamination. A wall that has been contaminated by sewage can not be salvaged because the materials may contain harmful bacteria or pathogens. Additionally, a flood cut needs to be performed on walls that contain insulation, because insulation can not be dried out and still function properly as insulation.

Situations That Do Not Require a Flood Cut

If the water that damaged the wall was from a clean source, such as a pipe leak, and there is no insulation, the restoration company may be able to salvage the wall by using an injection system to dry out the inside of the wall without cutting the drywall. Most restoration companies will make every effort to salvage as much property as possible.
When a building has been damaged by flooding, restoration services will work with you to attempt to salvage your property. However, in some instances, a flood cut will need to be made to properly restore the function of your building.

Dryer Fires

8/16/2022 (Permalink)

Clogged vents, ducts, and filters are the primary causes of dryer fires. Usually, this is a result of a buildup of lint, but can certainly be caused by an accumulation of dirt, grass, or anything else that remains after the washing process.

In addition to the lint filter, the outside vent can also become clogged, which prevents airflow and potentially leads to hazardous conditions. Again, this could be a result of lint making its way through the duct and collecting on the screen. However, it can also become obstructed by pesky birds, insect nests, or rodent nests.

How to prevent dryer fires:

1. Make sure it's properly installed

2. Clean lint screen after each use

3. Clean the vent and duct

4. Replace ducts

5. Have your dryer routinely inspected

6. Make sure you are using your dryer correctly

The 3 Basics Categories of Water

8/8/2022 (Permalink)

The 3 Basic Categories of Water

Category 1: White/Clean Water
The water stems from a clean source and poses no substantial risk from contact, ingestion, or inhalation. However, it can develop in another category if it comes into contact with other surfaces or materials. Typically, Category 1 water will evolve into Category 2 after 24 hours if left untreated.

Category 2: Grey Water
Grey water is contaminated water that doesn’t contain sewage. It may still contain some contaminates and has the potential to cause illness if contacted or ingested. It may contain potentially dangerous levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms, as well as other organic or inorganic matter (chemical or biological). Grey water can arise from sources such as a sink, washing machine, or the shower. Grey water can be used on your lawn or garden but if left unattended for 48 hours it can become Category 3.

Category 3: Black Water
Black water contains sewage or has encountered fecal matter. It is grossly contaminated and may contain pathogenic bacteria or other harmful agents. Such water sources may carry silt, organic matter, pesticides, metals, or toxic organic substances.

Time and temperature can also affect the quality of water and change its category.

Tips for Heavy Rainfall

8/8/2022 (Permalink)

Heavy rainfall can cause damage to your property, here are a few tips to get you through the season with hopefully minimal damage.

Home and Business Tips

  • Look into purchasing flood insurance. Call your insurance agent make sure flood insurance is right for you.
  • Install rain gutters and other drainage systems. Clean out rain gutters frequently, proper water flow will direct water away from your property.
  • Fix any leaks ASAP, a small leak can quickly turn into something greater.
  • Extra roof protection. You can spend a bit more to install a rubber roof underlay, a waterproof barrier that goes under the shingles and protects the roof from water intrusion. This will also help with insulation in the wintertime.

Rainy Driving Tips

  • Don’t use cruise control. This feature works great in dry conditions, but when used in wet conditions, the chance of losing control of the vehicle can increase, as you will have less control over the vehicle.
  • Slow down and leave room in front of you. Slowing down during wet weather driving can be critical to reducing a car’s chance of hydroplaning, when the tires rise up on a film of water.
  • Posted speed limits are the recommended speed during ideal conditions. Do not feel pressured to drive at the posted limit during a rainstorm, but do not drive too slowly either. As other drivers may have to make dangerous maneuvers to avoid you.

Commercial Water Damage

7/28/2022 (Permalink)

When speaking with local business owners and property managers in regards to potential water damage situations, the knee-jerk reaction is to picture a massive storm, flooding offices, and shutting down businesses for days to weeks.

However commercial water damage can happen all year but is usually focused in the fringe seasons, when the weather switched from hot to cold and vice-versa, and it can drastically affect the operation of your business. Here are some of usual culprits of water damage to commercial buildings.

  1. Faulty sprinkler systems

Some offices and retail buildings still have old and outdated sprinkler systems that work together with fire protection systems. When a fire happens, these sprinklers are very useful in limiting damage, but they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are defective or in need of replacement.

2. Damaged equipmen

This cause of commercial water damage is more common in businesses that use appliances and equipment that make use of water, such as restaurants. If the appliance fails and sends water throughout your building, you will face a water emergency. This can be extra damaging if it occurs after hours and is left alone for long periods of time.

3. Broken pipes and plumbing

Just like in a house, if the plumbing system in your property fails water damage could be the result. Bursting pipes are a regular occurrence in Calgary with our fluctuating weather patterns that can result in pipes freezing and thawing out rapidly.

4. Sewer Backups

One last cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise, is the sewer backup. Should the sewer or sump pump to your building back up or become damaged it can result in Black Water rising into your building. Contaminated Black Water can cause adverse health effects and ruin products and office furnishings. SERVPRO of Lake Geneva has certified IICRC technicians that specialize with this type of water damage.

If your business has suffered commercial water damage, SERVPRO of Lake Geneva will get you and your business back up and running again. Call us anytime at (262) 248-7588!

Kitchen is the Most Common Spot for a Fire

7/22/2022 (Permalink)

The heart of the home, kitchens are also the most common spot in the house for fires to start. Specifically, unattended cooking is the leading cause of kitchen fires and fire-related injuries.

These man-made fires are also easily preventable: Keep an eye on the stove, oven, and other appliances like toaster ovens, and move combustible items away from the stove. Never leave the kitchen when you’re working with high heat during preparations like frying, boiling, or broiling—fires need only seconds to go from a small flame to an out-of-control blaze.

A few more tips for safe cooking:

  • If someone else can’t watch things while you step away for a bathroom break or to help the kids, turn off the cooking appliance while you’re in the other room.
  • Turn off the stove and all appliances once you’re done cooking.
  • Keep everything off hot surfaces. Pay close attention to where you set dish towels or hot pads. Designate a spot, like a hook, to practice putting them back between each use.
  • Careful with what you are wearing to prevent singeing you clothing.
  • Do not heat your home with your oven.
  • Keep a  Fire extinguisher handy in case of fire. Water will only spread oil or grease and feed the flames.

Summer Storms

6/29/2022 (Permalink)

Summer storms are not rare in Wisconsin.  Some of those storms can be very severe with the threat of heavy rain, hail and tornadoes. With severe storms come flooding, power outages, and wind or hail damage.

These storms bring with them inches of rain in a short time frame. These types of summer storms are the perfect kindling for flash floods. These storms also bring with them the very real possibility of doing damage to your home or business.

Floods happen, and if our statistics are to be believed, they happen more than any other type of residential or commercial loss. The vast majority of calls we get involve water in some capacity and this is no different in the summer. When these freak storms blow through, many people are not prepared and therefore experience flooding and other water damage.

Luckily, SERVPRO of Lake Geneva is equipped for such instances. With years of experience of drying out homes and businesses, we should be the very first call you make when summer decides to get weird and start dumping water on your home or business.

Wildfires

6/20/2022 (Permalink)

Wisconsin is most known as “America’s Dairyland” and is particularly famous for its beer and cheese. One of the scarier things that can occur in Wisconsin are wildfires. As far back as the late1700s, large fires – Not particularly hot or destructive, but spacious ones- moved across Wisconsin every few years.  Some of the more notable ones were German Road, Cottonville, Crystal Lake and the most largest known one in Wisconsin the Peshtigo Fire.

Sometimes these fires make their way into suburban areas. Houses are burned to the ground, businesses are scorched and production comes to a halt, and (worst of all) lives are put on hold or sometimes lost altogether.

Fire damage is easily the worst type of loss a person can endure. Water may leave marks, mold requires cutting walls, but fire can destroy property entirely. When this happens, more than just belongings are lost. Memories, time, and a sense of safety also go up in flames.
If your home or business is affected by a fire, give SERVPRO of Lake Geneva a call. With our experience and attention to detail, we can help ease the pain that comes from a fire. We carefully inventory your belongings to assist insurance companies, we haul away wreckage, and we deodorize and reconstruct homes and businesses.

While it may be a long time before things get back to normal, rest assured: If SERVPRO is on the job, you are in good hands.

The Importance of taking action to prevent commercial losses

3/2/2022 (Permalink)

Commercial losses on a large scale can come quickly and carry a heavy price tag. Something as simple as a leaky roof or a drippy pipe can cause thousands in reconstructive damages and repairs. As some disasters are natural there is little that can be done to prevent injury to your building or to have an exact plan in place for preventative measures. On the other hand, there are many steps that can be implemented ahead of time that can greatly reduce the amount of time needed to recover.

  • Most importantly is to have an emergency plan on hand and constructed ahead of time to refer to in case disaster strikes. This should include the contact information for your nearest SERVPRO facility, as we can help assess and repair commercial damages on large and small scales on any type of disaster you may be facing.
  • Know where all vital power sources and water sources are located in your facility. This includes your main water shut off valve and circuit breakers as cutting these off can be major contributors to salvaging your property.
  • Have all vital insurance and business information prepared in an emergency folder for easy and swift access to prevent the delay of repairs and to expedite the time it takes to start the repairs.

These are just a few steps that can be taken to lessen the difficulties you may experience after Commercial building loss. SERVPRO of Lake Geneva is just a call away and is here for you should you need us.

Damaging effects from storms

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Storms can produce many damaging effects from high winds and heavy rainfall, to lightning strikes and flooding. Each carries its own destructive properties. Lightning strikes can be the ignition source to starting devastating fires and heavy rains could possibly produce dangerous flood waters. Some storm cells can increase in intensity and produce even stronger fronts such as tornadoes. It is important to consider each possibility and prepare for anything Mother Nature may throw at you. SERVPRO of Lake Geneva has the ability and experience to mitigate and repair any effects storm damage may incur. From fallen trees that destroy your roof to basements flooded with unsanitary water, we clean it all. The longer time passes after disaster strikes, the higher the price tag will be. Call us today at 262-248-7588.

When extreme and violent weather strikes

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Extreme and violent weather can unfortunately happen when we least expect it. Heavy rains or strong winds have the capability of causing thousands in damages. Once the storm is over and it is safe to walk the grounds, you may notice cosmetic issues such as patio furniture that has been knocked over. But you must take a closer inspection of the areas that matter most and can result in more costly repairs. Ensure windows are intact with no cracks, damaged frames or broken panes. Look for any shingles that may have been lost during heavy winds. Clogged gutters can also be an issue to focus on. Check to ensure no items had gotten lodged during the storm. Lastly inspect to be sure that your siding, paint or brick exterior shows no signs of wear, as each is susceptible to high velocity storm fronts. By doing these steps soon after storm damages occur can save you time and money and may avoid further problems.

When unwarted water damage strikes

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

When unwanted water seeps into places it doesn’t belong, it brings numerous issues along that can make matters worse. Water damage can become more serious as the problem goes undetected or unaddressed. Not only does water damage spread, it also becomes significantly at risk of mold formation in a short amount of time. Unfortunately, water damage isn’t always apparent. Our skilled technicians at SERVPRO of Lake Geneva are equipped with infrared sensors which can detect temperature changes within the walls. But what are the signs to notice before you give us a ring? Here are 4 signs of impending water damage.

Do you hear what I hear? : Most of us are familiar with the sounds our homes make. From the rushing water of the plumbing systems, to creaking floorboards in the hallways, they become less alarming as time goes by. What you need to pay attention to are the different or unfamiliar sounds your home may be making. From a slow drip to flowing water, be aware of the sounds around you, they may indicate a larger problem.

What stinks? : When moisture comes in contact in dark places, a distinct scent of mildew is sure to follow. Trust your nose and follow it to the source. Early detection may help you prevent a huge mold infestation on top of the water damages.

From a puddle to a pool: Have you noticed unexplainable pools of water? Any puddles that keep reappearing after you’ve cleaned them? Chances are you are facing a leak somewhere in the area.

Cold Abode: Moisture and water tend to zap a home of heat, as it draws it in to evaporate. If your home is difficult to heat or your walls are cold to the touch, it may be an indication of moisture within.

When water damage presents itself unexpectedly, give us a call day or night and we will be there to make things right!

National Fire Protection Association

1/6/2022 (Permalink)

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a fire department located somewhere in the United States responds to a fire every 24 seconds. Furthermore, it’s estimated that fires each year account for more than $25.5 billion in direct property damage costs. Let’s take a closer look at how SERVPRO Lake Geneva can help you cleanup and recover from a devastating fire, water, mold, storm or commercial property damage event.

Inspection and Damage Assessment for Fires

After our initial outreach and emergency contact with a customer, our team comes to the property to carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action that we will follow throughout the remaining steps of the restoration process.

Cleaning and Sanitizing Fire Damage

Once we have created a plan for your property restoration project, our team gets geared up and ready to clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that have been damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Your Choice for Commercial Restoration Success

Restoration is the final (and most important) step in our process in getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business. This process uses multiple types of equipment and can take as long as it’s needed for the damage to be completely remediated.

Sticking With the Team at SERVPRO for Your Commercial Restoration Project

Whether you’ve experienced fire, water, mold, storm or commercial property damage, SERVPRO Lake Geneva should always be your choice to restore your property back to its original condition. If you’d like to speak with a specialist on our team today, make sure to call us 24/7 at (262)-248-7588 so that we can understand your unique situation.

The Importance of Smoke Detectors

1/6/2022 (Permalink)

Smoking materials, including cigarettes, pipes, and cigars, are the cause of starting more than 17,000 home structure fires reported to U.S. fire departments every year! Fires from cigarettes and smoking materials cause nearly 1,000 deaths and 3,000 injuries each year in the U.S., according to the National Fire Protection Association. Find out what you need to know about keeping your home and family safe from smoking hazards in your home.

Smoking Hazards

Smoke is a mixture of heated particles and gases, and it’s impossible to predict its exact make up. The items burned, the temperatures reached, and the amount of oxygen available all play a part in determining the type of smoke produced. While smoke may seem to dissipate quickly, the quick cooling of the particles leave a film and odor able to penetrate the contents of a building, and its structure.

The Importance of Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors allow people to get up see what’s going on. Most the time when we have a fatal fire, there is not a working smoke detector. It’s important to have a safety plan that prepares you to think about where that fire is and how you’re going to get away from it, or get out of the house.

As the seasons change over into the next one, make sure to take the time to change out the batteries in your smoke detectors and test them as well. You don’t want to be in the position where you’re not able to detect massive amounts of smoke in your home until it’s too late.

Smoke Damage

Smoke damage is the physical damage caused by smoke that’s generated by a fire, not the damage caused by the fire itself. Smoke doesn’t destroy items like fire does, it just coats them with soot and a foul smelling odor.

Smoke damage is also a major health risk, whether it’s the result of a full on house fire or a localized fire that was contained to one room. During smoke inhalation, you have more carbon monoxide in your lungs which prohibits oxygen into your body.

Getting your Home Back After a Fire

No matter how a home fire occurs, it can be devastating for a homeowner to shoulder. If you are a smoker or live with a smoker, make sure to practice safe smoking habits to deter the onset of a home fire. If a home fire still arises, make sure to call SERVPRO Lake Geneva at (262) 248-7588 for a complete fire restoration consultation that helps get your home back into pre-fire condition.

Commercial Water Damage

1/6/2022 (Permalink)

Time is money. And in the world of commercial water damage restoration, this adage is particularly pertinent. Specifically, when your business property is affected by water damage, you may have to relocate or temporarily close your doors. The time that is taken to complete these processes results in a loss of revenue and no business owner wants to suffer from a cut in his bottom line. Obtaining professional commercial water damage restoration services from a company like SERVPRO can help restore your property efficiently and economically. In saving you time, we can also save your business money. Here are some of the services we can utilize to make it all happen:

The Property Assessment. When the SERVPRO Lake Geneva professionals come out to your commercial property, the first step we'll do is a thorough assessment of the exterior and interior of the building. This evaluation will help us determine the scope of the water damage, whether from a burst pipe or a flood. Once we complete the assessment, we'll be able to develop a clear, customized action plan for remediation work.

Drying Work. Water removal begins upon reaching an agreement. A fundamental aspect of water damage restoration is drying your property quickly to minimize secondary water damage. The initial impact of ruin will mount as wicking and water absorption continue. Our industry leading professionals make use of cutting edge equipment to complete this task. Some of the equipment we'll use includes water pumps (truck mounted, portable, and ridable), sump pumps, water vacuums, air movers and dehumidifiers. It is immensely important that this work is completed as quickly as possible because pooling water creates the ideal breeding ground for mold growth. These fungi can stain and damage porous materials such as drywall and carpeting as well as cause health effects.

Other Services. Ancillary services may be required for successful water damage restoration. SERVPRO customizes specific treatments depending on the circumstances relating to your commercial property.
• content restoration, document drying
• mold remediation
• deodorization
• sanitation
• odor removal
• smoke removal
• vent cleaning
• air duct cleaning

Let's Talk about Water Damage

9/13/2021 (Permalink)

Picture this: You finish a successful day at your business, lock up your building and head home for the night. You come back the next morning, ready for the day only to discover that your building is flooded from a broken pipe. Your floor, walls and most of inventory inside are damaged. This is a nightmare scenario for a business owner. And unfortunately, it’s an all too common one.

According to industry estimates, more than 14,000 people in the U.S. experience a water damage emergency at home or at work each day. Many of these emergencies occur in a similar pattern to the scenario we described above: burst pipes, leaky toilets, and faulty water heaters.

Here are our top four tips for protecting your business from water damage.

  1. Monitor your appliances that use water.  It’s not uncommon for modern offices to have kitchens with dishwashers or fridges with ice makers. Make sure that the hose connections to any water-using appliances you have installed at your business are secure. You’ll also want to make sure that you’re following the regular maintenance schedule for those appliances.
  2. Keep an eye on your pipes.  Leaky pipes can be one the biggest sources of damage for a business. If you notice a leak, investigate it immediately before it becomes a larger problem with a much heftier price tag. Plumbing systems are also prone to stoppages and clogs, which can result in overflowing appliances, sinks, or toilets.
  3. Maintain your HVAC system.  When the heat gets a little too much to take, we all turn to our air conditioning systems to keep our employees cool. Make sure you have a friendly relationship with your local HVAC contractor will help keep air conditioner drain lines clear of sediment that can clog the line.
  4. Keep the roof over your head.  One of the biggest sources of water damage can come from a faulty roof. Missing, deteriorated, or damaged roofing materials can allow water to enter and damage ceilings or the interior of your business. If you notice a problem with the roof, address it immediately.

When you own your own business, you want to do everything in your power to protect it. If you’re concerned about guarding your business  against water damage, contact your independent agent to review your business insurance policy to make sure that your property limits are adequate. Your agent can also help you determine whether or not flood insurance would be advisable for your location.

Is your business prepared?

8/16/2021 (Permalink)

Do you know all of the damagers that may come up when owning your own business?  When you least expect it a property damage could happen in a multitude of ways.  Being able to prevent damages from occurring is a way to control inclement situations from arising. Protect your business from thieves by providing good lighting to the surrounding area. Secure your windows and entryways with well fitted materials such as metal or solid core wood. Protect yourself against electrical surges with power surge technology, when direct lightning hits during a storm, storm cells can cause damages. Be sure to unplug any appliances if you feel there is a potential of one occurring. Water damage is another avenue that can cause thousands in repair. Consider installing a water detection system to alert you to early water intrusion. Be sure to avoid pipes freezing by keeping your thermostat set to a minimum of 64 degrees. Always be sure to purchase and maintain your insurance coverage. If damages occur from neglect, there is a very real chance you could be stuck with a hefty bill.

Kitchen Grease Fire

8/16/2021 (Permalink)

The kitchen is the heart of the home. It is a universal meeting point to converse while rummaging for a snack and is an essential part of any household. So it should be no wonder to know that nearly 41 percent of fires originate in the kitchen area. Multiple factors can play into the dangers of in home fires, many of which we overlook. We will be going through a list of steps to take when confronted with a grease fire and how to practice the proper techniques to either get the fire under control, or remove yourself from the home and to seek help.

Once a fire ignites:

  • The most immediate approach you can take is to smother the flames with a cooking lid or cookie sheet. Leave on flame until it has been extinguished and the surface has cooled.
  • Immediately turn off the heat source
  • Baking Soda or Salt are the only two kitchen ingredients to be used when putting out a grease fire. Never use flour or any other substance to extinguish flames as they can make the fire worse.
  • If all else has failed and the fire is still manageable, use a fire extinguisher to control situation.

NEVER USE WATER TO PUT OUT GREASE FIRE FLAMES. Do not attempt to move burning items outside.

If all else fails:

  • If you cannot get the flames smothered it is imperative to immediately vacate the home and seek help. Kitchen fires can spread very quickly leaving you vulnerable and reduces your points of exit.
  • Close all doors behind you as you leave as it can help contain the spread of the flames.
  • Call 911 immediately from a safe distance.
  • Never under any circumstances reenter your home while fire is in progress.
  • Always have a current evacuation plan composed for your family to know which route is best to safely leave in the case of an emergency.

Home fire loss makes for a long process of recovery as well as the possibility of losing precious items that cannot be replaced. These simple steps and help you prevent disaster from striking and keep your family safe.

What Can Cause a Water Damage

7/23/2021 (Permalink)

What can Cause a Water Damage

SERVPRO of Lake Geneva understands the different causes & categories of water damage.

The poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner has a part that says “Water, water, everywhere, And all the boards did shrink; Water, water everywhere”.  If you are at home or at your office, you know that does not sound good.  The first thought that comes to your mind is where is it coming from, how do I shut this off;

Causes can include:

  • Leaky dishwashers or washing machines
  • Clogged pipes
  • Leaking roofs
  • Broken toilet pipes
  • Heavy rain
  • Snow or ice

SERVPRO of Lake Geneva knows it is imperative to start the cleanup process as soon as possible. The longer your home or business is waterlogged, the more damage you will see (and the more expensive it will be to repair after cleanup has been completed).

Categories of Water Damage in Devil’s Thumb:

  1. Clean water. It might come from an overflowing sink or a broken appliance. The water does not pose a threat to people. Keep in mind that any water will become contaminated after it stops flowing.
  2. Gray water. This water is contaminated from the get-go. It comes from broken toilets or sump pumps. It might not look dirty, or it might be brown.
  3. Black water. Like gray water, it might not look dirty. One major source of black water is broken sewage pipes. Another source is any water that has been standing still.

Are you Prepared for the Storm?

7/23/2021 (Permalink)

If a community is not prepared for a severe storm, the results can be devastating. SERVPRO® of Lake Geneva wants to share some of the following tips to keep in mind while putting together an emergency kit in the event of a severe storm approaching. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has stated emergency kits should include some of the following:

  • First aid kit
  • Any medicine currently being taken
  • Extra change of clothes and shoes
  • Pet supplies if you are taking care of an animal
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Emergency food and water

Do you have items on your list that we have not listed?  You can always add whatever else you may need. There should be an emergency kit in every residential building as well as all commercial buildings if possible. Aside from having an emergency kit ready, a plan should also be in place. If there is a designated storm area inside the office, occupants should head there with the emergency kits. Severe storms cannot be avoided, but with the right tools and resources they can be easier to deal with.  SERVPRO of Lake Geneva wants to make sure you are prepared!

Commercial loss can go from a small problem to a large scale problem very quickly.  Something as simple as a leaky roof or a drippy pipe can cause thousands of dollars between the mitigation and the reconstruction.  As some disasters are natural there is little that can be done to prevent injury to your building or to have an exact plan in place for preventative measures. On the other hand, there are many steps that can be implemented ahead of time that can greatly reduce the amount of time needed to recover.

  • You can contact you’re your marketing representative to put together an Emergency Ready Plan. This plan is offered free of charge to our customers.

Fire Tips - Why to close your doors!

7/22/2021 (Permalink)

Did you know by closing your door at night could save your life if your house started on fire.  If the unfortunate occurrence of a home fire, happens by having your doors closed the damage will be lessened with the addition of a fire alarm in the hallway and an exit plan out of your bedroom you can help eliminate some of the toxic fumes and suffocating smoke.  Within minutes of a fire located on a lower level, toxic fumes and suffocating smoke will have already made their way to the upper most rooms, stealing precious lifesaving minutes. A closed door acts as a shield between you and the damage raging outside. It also allows you time to formulate an escape plan, or if trapped, for rescue efforts to reach your location. A basic house fire can reach upwards of 1,100 degrees but by having your door remain closed prevents the atmospheric temperate of rising above 110 degrees. Hot, but survivable. By choosing this one simple step for your daily routine could be a lifesaving method that’s as simple as shutting the door.

SERVPRO of Lake Geneva is here to give you tips to keep safe and will always be there when things go wrong.  262-248-7588

Smoke and Soot Damage- Lake Geneva

7/2/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Lake Geneva will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

How Water Warps Hardwood

9/14/2020 (Permalink)

Water and wood do not play well together, least of all in your home or business setting. Water immediately has an adverse affect when in contact with wooden floors or surfaces. Wood absorbs and contracts causing it to expand and bowl out in an event known as 'cupping'. It is important to have the water removed as quickly as possible and have the wood properly dried. If water is left unattended, the spread of mold and mildew is an almost certainty. Without mitigation, your beautiful hardwood floors may not be able to be saved. There are many alternatives to hardwood flooring that can sustain water damages with little to no effect such as tile. Faux wood flooring has the appeal and warmth as real wood, but nothing can replace the history of original woodwork in a historic building. Many of the skills that were practiced in the past are no longer utilized and the workmanship is no longer available.

A large quantity of commercial buildings are not operated by the owner of the location and are, in turn, rented to outside parties. When disaster strikes, it is imperative that the renter know who to contact. Having prior knowledge of where to locate the emergency 'shut off' valves for gas and water can be a major factor in how extensive the damages can become. Property owners are responsible giving consent for restoration to commence. No work can begin without the owner’s approval. Don't let unexpected events take you by surprise. From Clean to Dirty: Water Damages

9/9/2019 (Permalink)

Water is a destructive force that can present itself in a multitude of ways. Typically, there are three types of water contamination to gage sanitation levels for proper repair. Clean water is the safest type of water intrusion. These occur from relatively clean water sources such as a broken water line or an overflowing bathtub. Usually free from contaminants, this water is considered innocuous and poses little risk to your health. Gray water is considered more hazardous, but still not toxic. Dishwasher or washing machines that have malfunctioned as well as clean toilet water would be considered gray water. Exercise caution with gray water and be sure not to allow it so sit stagnant too long. The most dangerous of all three levels of water contamination is listed as black water. Stemming from sewage backups and river overflows, this water is considered highly toxic. Never attempt to clean these types of contaminates without proper gear. Major health risks are posed in these disasters. SERVPRO has the experience to help you out of the worst moments life may bring. Give us a call; we are always here to help.

When lightning strikes

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

Lightning strikes are on the rise which could mean big trouble in the future if you are not covered. Electronic devices are especially susceptible to damage during a lighting strike. A common occurrence during an aggressive strike is for the surge to enter your home through pipes or wires from nearby utility poles. It is not as powerful as a direct hit, but is more common and brings with it its own set of issues. Your home or business most vulnerable port of entry is its electrical panel. Be sure to equip your building with a ‘whole house surge protection device’. It will halt the surge in its tracks. If the surge does not stop at the electrical panel, it has the ability to travel over wire surfaces in your home causing major damages such as fires. It is important to be aware of the threat that inclement weather poses and to prepare for any situation.

How to Survive a Riptide

7/12/2019 (Permalink)

Lake Michigan is known for its strong currents and dangerous undertows

In this edition of SERVPRO Survival we are going to be hitting on the most important steps to take if ever you find yourself or a loved one in the grip of a dangerous rip tide.

What we know most commonly as a ‘riptide’ is actually a rip current (a narrow channel of water rushing outwards) which can feel as gentle as a tug at first.

The Shallows:

Exit shallow water immediately when the sensation of tugging or pulling occurs. A rip tide is more difficult to maneuver from when in deeper water.
If you are in chest deep water and still able to touch bottom, walk sideways out of the line of current and immediately make your way to shore. (Always take note of posted warnings and do not swim where it is not recommended)
Swept away:

Remain calm. Rip tides WILL NOT pull you below the surface, even if it feels that way. What the current is doing is pulling you out further, not under. You must keep a calm and clear mind to handle the situation.
Do not exhaust yourself. If you are an adequate swimmer you are in no immediate danger of drowning if you do not over exert your mind or body.
Call for help if there is anyone in the immediate area.
(DO NOT ATTEMPT any rescue efforts without the aid of a flotation device. You could be swept away as well. Immediately call for rescue services)

Swim parallel to the coast line, no matter how far you have drifted. Swimming parallel to the coast will release you from the hold of the current. Swim in the direction of the breaking waves, as this indicates where the rip tide ends.
Back Float:

Conserving energy is essential to rip tide survival. If you feel yourself losing energy, the best technique is just to flow with it. Do not panic that you are further from shore. Back float and relax until the tide has dissipated and rescue efforts can commence.
Out of its grasp:

Swim diagonally to shore once released from the current. It reduces the possibility of reentering it unintentionally.
Rest as frequently as necessary to regain and sustain energy.
There is no way to predict when certain emergency situations arise. These simple and effective tips can help better ready yourself for when tragedy strikes. Stay aware of your environment and stay safe.

Warning signs: Water damage

7/1/2019 (Permalink)

When dealing with a broken pipe or leaking water, the effects may not be immediately noticeable. Sometimes the warning signs are subtle. Always be aware of your surroundings to potentially catch the damages before they get too great. Sometimes it isn't the sight of water damage that's your first signal, its the sound. A slow dipping sound can be an indication of bigger problems ahead. The smell is another noticeable alert. If there is a musty or damp smell in the air, it could be an indication of water damage in the vicinity. The feeling of being and visible pools of water are another red flag. Never face water damages alone. SERVPRO is here day and night to answer any questions you may have!

Trees can be the cause to multiple issues. Top heavy or improperly pruned landscaping can turn your yard into a battle ground. From downed power lines and destroyed roofs, trees can cause thousands in damage. It is important to know the steps to follow immediately after the damage has occurred.

Step One: Photograph the aftermath. Cell phones are a very useful way to document and share proof of property damage. Your insurance company will need this to ensure you get the proper compensation.

Step Two: Notify Insurance Company. You do not want to put too much time between the storm event and contacting your insurance company. They will need the basic information on the situation and will send an adjuster to gage damages. Ultimately, they will determine the payments needed for repairs to be done

I Saw the Signs: 4 Signs of Water Damage

2/5/2019 (Permalink)

Water, Water All Around: Winter Flood Awareness

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

Wisconsin has become a notorious swinging pendulum of back and forth weather patterns. From mild weeks spanning December, to biting cold and heavy snow fall in January, it’s hard to predict what could be headed our way. Naturally in the winter, flooding would be the last concern on our list of worries. But surprisingly, flooding can happen at any time of year, particularly in the cold months. There are numerous reasons as to why an area can flood during winter. Broken water pipes are a known culprit in the freezing temperatures. Sudden snow thaws can lead to a rapid amount of excess of bodies of water looking for a location to settle. Because the ground might still be in a frozen state, the water cannot be absorbed and will run off until it finds a stream or lake that can withhold its mass. When this happens, flooding is almost always a side effect. There are a few steps that can be taken to be better prepared for these types of storm disasters.

Insure yourself: Look into purchasing a flood insurance policy if you do not already have one in place.

Know it all: Get familiarized with what your insurance covers and what it does not

A Simple Plan: Always have a flood plan prepared which should include evacuation routes. Have important documents stored in a safe, waterproof location.

Picture This: Take photos of your possessions. It will be very useful for insurance claims should disaster strike.

Freeze Fire in Its Tracks: Fire Prevention During Winter

1/29/2019 (Permalink)

There’s nothing like staying warm through a bitter cold evening in Wisconsin. The whipping wind is notorious for its ability to steal your breath away in a matter of moments. Heat is essential and our only defense during the coldest months of the year. December, January and February bring the harshest wrath. As we are in the grips of a record cold forecast ahead of us, listed below are preventative measures and tips to keep in mind to prevent your home from going up in smoke.

Side effects of heating sources: Carbon Monoxide is a silent and invisible threat to every member of your home. It is an odorless and colorless gas that is commonly omitted from cooking equipment and heating appliances. Be sure to have proper ventilation and to have your equipment up to date to prevent the possibility of exposure to the poison. Having a CO reader in your home is an essential tool as well, as it detects the threat immediately.

Mood lighting: Candles are a common threat statistically in the winter months. Never leave a candle lit for more than 4 hours at a time. Supervision of any lit candle is advised at all times.

It’s electric: Electrical units are a leading cause of home fires in the United States. Lighting equipment, washer/dryer fans and space heaters are typically the culprit in these incidents. Following instructions and turning units off when unused is a preventative measure to take to avoid disaster. Never use any heating source unsupervised.

To avoid disaster this winter use these helpful tips to remain safe and cozy during the cold dark days.

Batten down the hatches: Blizzard prevention

1/29/2019 (Permalink)

With temperatures that can range anywhere across the scale, from mild and cool to subzero and catastrophic it is essential to know how to prepare for an incoming blizzard and or freezing temperatures. Listed below are steps to take in order to prevent disaster when the bitter cold is on its way.

Stock up shamelessly: When time is on your side and the winter storm has not yet hit, take that trip to the local store and stock up on the vitals. Non-perishable foods, batteries, flash lights, canned heat source, pet food and supplies, candles and medicine that you may need. Having salt to assist in ice on walkways is also a benefit. Emergency foods are a must. A few examples of survival foods:

  • Crackers
  • Granola Bars
  • Canned fruit and veggies, tuna, soup
  • Applesauce
  • Boxed or canned juices

Roger that: Charge cellphones and spare charging units. It is also recommended you physically write down an emergency contact list in the unfortunate situation your phone may lose power. Family members, your power company and any other emergency numbers should be included on this list.

Lock it down: Storm proofing your home is another step to take when an impending storm is headed your way. Apply weather stripping to doors and windows. Covering your windows with plastic sheeting helps keep the cold at bay as well. Keep all unnecessary rooms closed off to help isolate the heat in rooms that are used. Stay indoors and restrict travel for emergency situations only.

These simple preventative measures can help you remain prepared and safe during the bitter cold months. Stay cozy out there Wisconsin!

Grease Lightning: Fires in the kitchen

1/11/2019 (Permalink)

The kitchen is the heart of the home. It is a universal meeting point to converse while rummaging for a snack and is an essential part of any household. So it should be no wonder to know that nearly 41 percent of fires originate in the kitchen area. Multiple factors can play into the dangers of in home fires, many of which we overlook. We will be going through a list of steps to take when confronted with a grease fire and how to practice the proper techniques to either get the fire under control, or remove yourself to seek help.

It's Elemental

1/7/2019 (Permalink)

Mother Nature is a force no one can reckon with. The elements are an unpredictable enemy that anyone who owns property needs to take into constant consideration. With little or no warning, a natural disaster can wipe your business off the map within the blink of an eye. It is vital to be prepared for what could potentially be in store in your future and the damage control you can have prepared for these very situations. Listed below are a few examples of how you can defend your assets against the unforeseen elements.

Risk Assessment:  Where you are located can dictate your plan of action. If you are living in an area prone to flooding or located where tornadoes are common it might seem obvious in what coverage you require. A risk assessment is an important tool as it can identify the lesser probable causes of loss. Just because some events are less likely to occur than others, does not prevent the possibility of them happening. The best offense is a great defense. So be prepared.

Business Interruption Insurance: When you lose your ability to earn income do to damaged property your business interruption insurance will cover most of your loss. Some scenarios are straightforward as in water damage due to a burst pipe or structural damage caused by a fire. Natural disasters are not as specific. Secondary issues such as closed roads due to down trees can cause a loss of income and a basic interruption plan will not cover these situations. It is very important to look into supporting insurance that can be added on to cover such events.

FEMA Funding: Flooding is one of the most common side effects of natural disasters. While rain might be covered by your Business Owner's Policy, once it settles in any location it is no longer considered rain and is now defined as flood water. Flood water can only be insured by The Federal Flood Insurance Program which is administered by FEMA.

Consider all options: When insuring your commercial building it should be of highest priority to be sure all options have been considered. Be completely aware of the threat that the elements pose and the steps you can have in place to insure your property should disaster strike.

Warming up a cold space

11/29/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial buildings typically lack a certain ‘cozy’ feeling and the winter months truly showcase how dull the environment can become. Drafty windows, harsh lighting and cold floors can add to the discomfort of spacious building interiors. Luckily, there are simple and inexpensive ways to battle the cold, and warm up your environment.

Lighting: Bright, overhead lighting can be zapping your office of precious needed color and subtle warmth. Try using softer lighting options that lessen the strain on your eyes. Small table lamps and accent lighting are great options to utilize.

Carpeting/Rugs: Cement or hard flooring is not optimal to retain heat. Adding throw rugs and sections of carpeting can add texture and help soften the cold coming from below. They also add an aesthetic appeal against any hard surface.

Plants: Having live plants present in any indoor space during winter months is known for its health benefits.  Not only do they help purify toxins in your home you may be unaware of they also add a pleasant contrast to the colorless landscape outdoors.

Caulking drafty windows: Do a walk about to all windows that are a barrier to the elements. If you can feel a difference in temperature or pressure a great way to shore up the exposed areas is with caulking. Meant to fill in the cracks and weak areas of seal, they help better insulate your space.

Winter in Wisconsin can arrive early and exit late. With these simple tips your commercial space will become a small escape from the outside world. As always, SERVPRO of Lake Geneva is here to help!

Consider This

11/13/2018 (Permalink)

Selecting flooring for your commercial space can be more multi-faceted than you might first expect. There are many contributing factors to consider when making the final decision. Do you require a smooth surface for machinery to easily glide across? Will you or your work staff be on their feet for long hours? These are major questions you should be asking yourself to determine which flooring would work best. Typically, there are three different types of surfaces most commonly used in commercialized space.

  • Concrete Etching: This option can leave your floor with warmth and rich earthy tones. As cement has a tendency of not retaining or being able to hold paint or stain, etching is done to create pores in the surface, allowing stain to hold.
  • Epoxy Coating: Most commonly used in commercial settings, Epoxy coatings cover wide surface areas of hard material such as concrete or steal. It creates a barrier over the surface which seals and aids water resistance. It consists of an epoxy resin that is crossed with a co reactant or hardener.
  • Vinyl Planking: Luxury planking has become a hot topic of debate in recent years for its upswings and draw backs. Visually, vinyl planking is unmatched. The variety of textures and options are forever changing and updating. Structurally though, it is not nearly as strong as its competition. It also is not as environmentally friendly as the access pieces that remain unused after installation typically ends up in the trash. Harsh cleaning chemicals are also known to warp vinyl after prolonged exposure.

As with any project, there are many options to weigh and decisions to make to prevent any unexpected issues present themselves. As always, SERVPRO of Lake Geneva is here to help you with any questions or assistance you may need! Give us a call today!

Winter is Coming

9/20/2018 (Permalink)

You read that right. Fall is tip toeing her way in as Summer is packing her bags and finding her way out. Apple orchards are prepping for their upcoming season and the crisp scent of burning leaves will soon be tickling our noses. What better time to prep your home for the upcoming bitter cold that will make her arrival in the not so distant future? Listed below are extremely helpful tools and practices to keep the warm in and the cold out. They may just help you save some valuable loot in your pocket as well.

  • Simmer Down: Lower the temperature in your water heater. This one simple adjustment can save you upwards of 10% off of your water heating costs. Typically water heaters are set at a scalding 140 degrees, bringing it down to 120 degrees will save you bookoo $$$.
  • Backdraft: Drafty windows and doors have the potential of wasting up to 30% of your energy use. They also can trick your thermostat into false readings. Fortunately, a simple solution such as a rolled towel at the base of the door (or create a draft snake, if you’re feeling crafty) will lock out that unwanted cold.
  • Be Kind, Rewind: Turning the direction of your fan blades from counterclockwise to clockwise will actually create a warmer room. Hot air rises, the fan blades help force the warmth back into the lower part of your room.
  • Out With The Old: Change your furnace filter! A commonly overlooked step in energy savings. Not only does a dirty filter restrict air flow, it also has the potential of harboring dangerous materials, such as mold, bacteria and pollen. It is best to change monthly during the winter months.
  • Leaving The Abode: Lower the thermostat every time you leave your home. Each degree you lower your homes temperature can save you between 1% and 3% on your heating bill. Programmable thermostats are available that will keep on top of lowering and raising the temperature in sync with your schedule.

Being able to stay ahead of the impending cold will save you money and stress. Follow these simple steps and stay warm! As always, SERVPRO of Lake Geneva is here to help in any way we can!

Shut the Door!

9/20/2018 (Permalink)

A recent study has discovered that a closed door can save your life. In the unfortunate occurrence of a home fire, it has now been proven that, other than fire alarms, a closed door is essential.

As always, SERVPRO of Lake Geneva is here to give you tips to keep safe and will always be there when things go wrong.

Fall into a cleaner home: tips for every room

9/18/2018 (Permalink)

If you’re anything like me, deep cleaning comes twice a year. Spring cleaning is most commonly discussed as we collectively look ahead to open windows and a light breeze sweeping through a crisp clean home, but fall cleaning is also very pertinent. It ushers in the era of being secluded inside away from the cold, so let’s be sure your space is ready. Included below are easily overlooked practices that will up your cleaning game.

Bedroom:

  • Launder the sheets. That means all of them. From the bed skirt to the pillow cases, leave no sheet unwashed. Use a tennis ball in the dryer along with down filled materials to prevent clumping. For heavier materials allow running an extra lap on the spin cycle before transferring to dryer, it speeds up the drying process. To prevent damage or over loading, take the bigger items to the launder mat and use an extra-large front loading washer. It’s worth the effort.
  • Don’t forget the mattress! A sprinkle of baking soda and a quick hour to allow to be sit on the material is an effective way to get those hard to wash materials sanitized.

Kitchen:

  • Cabinets first. Wipe all exposed cabinet surfaces top to bottom, along with hardware. If cabinet tops are exposed, wiped down thoroughly and line top with newspaper. The paper will collect dust and added grim, allowing cleaning to be easier when it’s time to replace.
  • Empty out the refrigerator. It’s surprising to see how much damage is done when the space is cleared. Wipe down all surfaces and fully cleanse before re adding items. Do the same for the dishwasher and microwave. If possible, pull appliances from wall to clean behind and below. You will be amazed as to what has fallen between the cracks.
  • Organize and sanitize countertops. Removing unnecessary clutter presents a more coherent and pleasant environment.

Bathroom:

  • Wash your shower curtain. Most can be tossed in the washer on a cold, low cycle but be sure to check the tag. It is an overlooked tip that greatly impacts the sanitation of your wash room.
  • Use warmed distilled vinegar water to soak the soap scum and water spots from your door
  • Pull all items from below your cabinet, organize and sanitize.

Family room:

  • Vacuum every piece of furniture by removing the cushions and removing debris from between lining, also use attachment to reach the back of the surfaces as well.
  • Remove all artwork and framed items. Dust using a warm microfiber rag. Do not use any kind of spray, as it can damage the photo or artwork underneath.
  • Dust the electronics. Save yourself some time and invest in a skinny dusting wand that can maneuver between cords and under consoles.

It is a self-satisfying accomplishment when all is done and you can kick your feet up and relax in a completely safe and cleansed environment. As always, SERVPRO of Lake Geneva is here to help you when disaster strikes and to provide tips before it does.

Preemptive Measures: Unique Ways to Avoid Flooding On Your Property

9/18/2018 (Permalink)

It’s no secret that the damages of a flood affecting your home are devastating. The cleanup after such an event is almost worse than the flood itself. You are left with the remnants of beloved items. You are uprooted from your daily life and experience higher levels of stress than acceptable. Being able to avoid the catastrophic effects of flooding can restore your peace of mind, and also benefits the environment, if done correctly. Listed below are helpful tools to be used in order to prep your property for incoming water.

Plant a Rain Garden: A growing trend among homeowners is the design and installation of rain gardens. Using native plants with high water tolerance is key. They require almost no upkeep or watering between rainfalls and are helpful to our natural environment. Directing water from known flooding areas of your property, or planting directly on the location, these gardens retain and absorb excess water. Even a small addition of a rain garden has a huge impact on the water level on your property after a flood.

Heavier Mulch Will Help You Out: When mulching with lightweight materials, the odds of a misplaced mulch mess being handed to you is significantly high. Light materials are known to scatter in flooded conditions and to clog drainage ways. Hardwood mulch is heavier, making it more difficult to spread and is known for their low maintenance appeal.

Install a Green Roof: Now hear us out. It may seem excessive, or out of your budgets capabilities even, but you may be pleasantly surprised. The cost and labor needed to install these futuristic roof covers has been significantly reduced over the most recent years. As long as you have a flat or gently sloping roof you are in the clear. Not only do green roofs elongate the life of your roof, studies show it also increases insulation and reduces energy costs.

A Driveway That Drains: Second only to roofs, driveways are the biggest contributor to storm water run-off. Most commonly, swayes with drainage ports are installed on each side of your driveway, although it is not the most effective. Using spaced gravel or even grass greatly reduces the effects of flood water run-off. They are not only visually pleasing but a benefit to the environment.

Flooding can happen suddenly and with little warning. These simple and effective actions could save you a disaster on your hands. As always, SERVPRO of Lake Geneva is here to help you, when all else has gone wrong.

History beneath our feet: Saving hardwood from unexpected water

9/11/2018 (Permalink)

Hardwood floors are a classic signature to any home, bringing a warmth and delicate age to any environment they bestow. From old country farm homes, to sprawling warehouses hardwood flooring adds finesse. But with the sweets comes the sours. When water damage occurs, time is of the absolute essence. Warping and disfigurement from water can leave lasting and detrimental effects within an incredibly short amount of time. Some of which cannot be repaired to its original glory. That’s why one of the most useful methods of recovery from damaging water to natural hardwood floors is our highly effective Drying Mat System. Our mats have mastered the art of removing water vapor that has been deeply absorbed by wooden planks. Our system has saved countless dollars and spared even more headaches for our customer base. Our drying mats are surprisingly simple in design visually (a basic floor mat with a hose attached) but incredibly powerful. When a hometown customer of ours had a pinched line in their ice maker, it caused an incredible amount of access water which flooded her kitchen. Our team of meticulously trained experts at SERVPRO of Lake Geneva was able to immediately address the situation and have the damage under control with the use of our Drying Mat System. Hardwood floors retain a time in history, some being centuries old. Being able to preserve what we can and restoring what we must is what makes what we do so worth it.

When the Wind Blows: Tornado Survival

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

The most unpredictable aspect of life as a Wisconsinite has to be the fickle weather she brings along with her every season. With the ability to produce the wrath of any and every element imaginable, being prepared for pending disaster is essential for anyone making Wisconsin their home. In this edition of SERVPRO Survival we will be reviewing the basic steps to take when you find yourself in the line of disaster. In light of a recent study that has dug into our past and discovered that a tornado has occurred IN EVERY MONTH of the year (except February) we have compiled an easy to follow, comprehensive list of what to do and where to go if you find yourself in the path of an incoming twister.

   Scenario 1:   At Home

  1. Seek shelter in the lowest, most interior room available. AVOID ALL WINDOWS.
  2. The center of the room has been proven to be the safest location.
  3. Find fixed/secured furniture such as a work bench or heavy desk and anchor yourself.
  4. Always keep head and neck protected from injury. Athletic helmets have been used and have saved lives in extreme weather conditions, as it provides and extra amount of security to your head. So use one if available. Keep very small children strapped into car seat if available. (Do not go to car to retrieve)
  5. Vehicles and Mobile homes provide little no protection to extreme elements. If possible, seek shelter in a more secure area such as basement or inner area of nearby building.

Scenario 2: At Work or School (Shopping Center)

  1. Seek immediate shelter in a secure inside hallway/ AVOID ALL WINDOWS
  2. Avoid all areas with a wide-spanned roof, such as large hallways, open gymnasiums and cafeterias. They sustain the most wind damage and leave you vulnerable when roof is dismantled.
  3. Sturdy furniture or secured items such as heavy desks or work benches provide added protection.
  4. Always protect your head and neck with hands and arms, or articles of clothing available for added protection.

 Scenario 3: In Your Car

  1. If you are caught by strong winds, immediately park your car safely out of the line of traffic. Remain in your vehicle with your seatbelt attached. Cover your head and protect your neck, keep head lower than line of window.
  2. Use a blanket, cushion or anything available to cover yourself from flying debris.
  3. If time is on your side and the twister is visible but in the distance, you need to act quickly. Seek immediate shelter in nearest building available, your car is unsafe shelter.
  4. NEVER SEEK SHELTER UNDER A BYPASS OR BRIDGE. They create hazardous driving situations and provide no shelter from what the wind is blowing.

Scenario 4: Outdoors

  • DO NOT PANIC (but why are you outside? How did this happen?!)
  • Seek shelter indoors IMMEDIATELY, if no building is available lay in the lowest area possible, such as a ditch.
  • Stay as far away as possible from trees and vehicles as they are easily uplifted and can blow right into you.

In all situations, the most important tool for survival is to remain calm and remember the tips provided to keep yourself and your family safe from harm. SERVPRO of Lake Geneva and its dedicated team of professionals are here to help you get back on your feet after disaster strikes and to provide you superior care in the worst of times.

Lake Geneva Smoke and Soot Cleanup

5/30/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Lake Geneva Home.

Does Your Lake Geneva Home Have A Mold Problem?

5/30/2018 (Permalink)

In Lake Geneva, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
